Final Evaluation

This evaluation will analyse the module prosthetics giving examples of the positives and negatives which took place. Kolb’s model of reflection will be the template for the reflection process demonstrated in this evaluation. A reflective observation will be provided after the experience has been concreted. A conclusion will create an understanding of what has been learnt from the experience and what one would do differently. The brief for this module was to design, manufacture and apply a full facial prosthetic make-up based on a chosen theme. The theme chosen was Strange Beauty and the reason why was because it relates to the area of work I want to be involved in, this being fashion make-up. A fox face was sculpted for a hunter gatherer fashion trend.
The first few stages of the prosthetic appliance process went well as instructions were followed correctly however when removing the first appliance from the two part mould, both moulds cracked. The first facial appliance turned out successful however the second prosthetic had the cracks in the detail. This was for the reason that when building the second mould, the ratio of plaster to water was incorrect leaving the mix to be too thin. The mould was made stronger by adding plaster to the outside of the negative and the edges of the positive demonstrating good problem solving skills. Unfortunately the model which the appliance was based for was unreliable which left one with many complications. A second model was used, however this meant a few things had to be changed such as the outfit. This was because the original model was two sizes smaller than the second model. Ears were made from red hair which were to be used on the shoot however these were disposed of as the replacement was a brunette. Due to insufficient funds the ears could not be re-made with brown hair. The edge of the mask stopped in the middle of the cheeks which were found very difficult to blend with the skin. The appliance was not a perfect fit however the final images were to a satisfying standard. Time management was a skill which was lacking.
During the module, skills which were demonstrated were problem solving, following instructions, creativity, organisation, planning, listening and teamwork. When practising on the first appliance although there were things that would be changed such as the detail which was painted, the result was pleasing for a first attempt. The outfit which was chosen suited the theme extremely well and the hair although with more time could have been styled better, was appropriate for the look. The blending of the mask around the eyes was done to a good standard and the overall shape of the prosthetic was well constructed.

In conclusion, I was satisfied with the result as the final images demonstrated a hunter gatherer trend with a fox face which was based under the strange beauty theme. I have learnt how to complete the process correctly when making a facial prosthetic and how to create a blog. If I was to redo the module I would chose to work with a reliable model. I would also sculpt the mask to the jawline to make blending it easier and paint the appliance using an airbrush to give the colour a smoother finish.

Action Plan

Below is an action plan put together to reach a personal goal. It has been composed to assure one follows necessary steps to pursue success. By writing an action plan, this develops organisational, planning and motivation skills. It will include a set target, what action one must take to reach the target, who will carry it out and who will be involved, when it will take place and how long for, what resources will be needed and the communication which will be needed.

Target: To gain more experience making prosthetic appliances and using an airbrush.

What action will occur: In my year out of education I will work and save money to buy all the equipment which is needed to complete the making of a prosthetic appliance. Once this target has been reached, in my spare time I will develop my skills as a make artist by continuously practising this process and creating new designs.

Who will carry this out: I will be the person carrying out this process. I will also ask a number of individuals to get involved as models and assistants. Steve Mcivor is a photographer who I have worked with a number of times, as we work well together he will be asked to participate.

By when will it take place and how long for: It may take a few months to save up for the equipment but a target to have all the products bought will be for the new year of 2015. There will be a number of tasks carried out over the year until I move to Southampton in September 2015 to complete a top up degree.

What resources will be needed to carry out this action: A number of resources will be needed to complete this target. All of the products which are used to complete a two part moulding process, life casting, sculpting, casting the appliance and application. A studio where one can work will be needed and a compressor must be bought for practice with the airbrush.

Communication: Communication will take place with individuals that want to get involved.
